Finally, my litlle obsession realized this year. yeah, i selected by my major in campus as a student that can join this summer course. Actually not in japan, but in Indonesia. It seems summer everyday in Indonesia, right? LOL! Actually, i took this story from activity report that i gave for campus report. So, i wrote all of my story in summer course in english. I have a lack ability in english, then sorry for incovenience reading.
Day 1 – 2011.09.19
Summer course programs began at 07.00 am, i went to landhuis guest house to accompany japanese team came to AH Nasution building with the college bus. Thereafter, we registered ourself and prepared our poster and setting up in front of discussion room.
First class was done by Mr. Rudi Poerwanto at 08.30 am, which informed us about tropical food. He said that tropical fruit in Indonesia is very diverse than any other country in the world. Its because the climate in this country provided to highly tropical fruit production. Mr. Rudy gives some example about tropical fruits like mangoes which have vitamin A and vitamin C content 8 times higher than apple. Beside that, banana which is tropical fruit that highly produced in Indonesia having a bigger kalium content than the other fruit. He also said the Indonesian tropical food problems are limited business, less intensive cultivation, limited superior varieties, less developed technology, weakness information system, low production, limited cargo for export, limited human resources, etc.
Subsequently, after his class, the class was continued by Mrs. Nampiah Sukarno, which teached us about role of biofertilizer in sustainable horticulture and agriculture crops in Indonesia. Biofertilizer that a substance which contain living microorganism and promotes the growth of the plants is very wellknown in Indonesia. Mrs. Nampiah informed us how about the effect of biofertilizer added (i.e arbuscular mychorrhiza, endophitic fungi, PGPR) with the plants disease and growth and she also explained about the government rules and minimum technical requirements each product of biofertilizer. The next class was informed us about climate change and plant protection in Indonesia. We have got information about characteristics of Indonesian crops that having a many diversity, most of them aren’t native crops and having a high rate international seeds trading. The disease that mostly attack the indonesian crops are invasion foreign disease, new pest and conventional major diseases. The diagnosis of disease can be measured by RAPD, RFLP, ELISA and serological technique.
At 12.00 am, we were breaking and the committee were checking the participant poster and the class continued at 01.00 pm with topic livestock waste processing. From this class, we got information about biogas from waste treatments and irrigation that utilize animal waste. Beside that, we also got information about how making compost, bokashi and urine fermentation technology (bio urine and herbal pesticide). Subsequently, the class was continued by students presentation by group B, C, and D and we can get many information about sustainability agriculture from that presentations from technical engineering thus post harvest processing. The end of presentation from first day of summer course programs was done at 06.00 pm and the participant returned to home.
Day 2 – 2011.09.20
2nd day at summer course programs began at 08.00 am, i went to landhuis guest house to accompany japanese team came to AH Nasution building. Thereafter, we registered ourself and entered the class. First class is teached by Kato sensei at 08.30 am which informed us about water quality management. He telled us that eutrophication is caused by rich nutrient (nitrogen and phosphate) enclosed water body or lake and it can degrade ecosystem by algal bloom and can make oxygen content decreasing and highly purification in water resources to make drinking water. Sustainability water usage focuseded on decreasing water usage, drainage, irrigation, reuse water enforcement and water quality high natural purification and nutrient recycle with biomass and it depend on climate change rainfall and ecosystem. From his presented, we also can got information that hydrological process divided by two types are surface runoff and ground water runoff. High fertilizer would be discharged by surface flow in rainfall and be percolated to groundwater. Denitrification and phosphorous absorbstion in paddy field can function as a natural purification. Ground water quality is damaged by long term excessive fertilizer. Environmental technology can made by purification and material circulation. He also informed us about unit pollutant model which can divide by two types are tank model and SWAT model. This unit can be solution to manage water quality in Indonesia to get a high crops quality.
The next class was held by Junko sensei that teached us about soil physics. From her class, we got information about transport phenomenon in soil by water, heat, gas, fertilizer and chemical. She also gave example about toyoura sands in japan that remain gasoline residual in that soil and can be alternative for soil degradation. Thereafter, the class was continued by Sakagami sensei which gave us information about swelling soil. Swelling soil is vertisoil that have a highly water holding capacity. As general, he also explained about soil types which can divided into two type namely vertisoil and insepti soil. He also suggested us, if we need precise information, we should obtain them by ourselves. It such as a good words that made by good learner like Sakagami sensei.
Subsequently, the class was continued by Naomi asahi sensei which tittled improving of productivity and sustainability in plant soil system. She informed us how to crop breeding cultivation technique. From her presentation, we can know that level of humic substances depend on soil structure, water retention, nutrient supply, cation retention, etc. Organic fertilizer can supply nitrogen (N), P2O5, K2O, maintain humic substances and biological supply. After organic fertilizer added to soil, microbial activity decrease and increase depend on many aspect (i.e microbes growth, organic content in soil and the temperature of soil).
The next class was done by Sato sensei which teached us about disease resistance in plant especially in horticulture. He explained that immune system in plant can made by production of immune via salycilic acid and jasmonic acid. Immune system via salycilic acid can induced by infection that can be cooperation with PBZ (probenazoic) and saccharin then it can producing salycilic acid with BTH in internal plant then making transcriptional factor and continued with producing pathogenesis related. From that pathway, we got information that infection in plant inducing disease resistance. He also presented about his research heat shock treatment to induce disease resistance in strawberry plants. From his presented, we got information that hot water treatment to strawberry plant can inducing disease resistance, having a washing effect and disinfection effect. Hot water treatment can induce salycilate hidroxilase and making the other pathway of salycilic acid production that producing catechol in plant as immune system. This treatment can induce high production of BTH but, no effect to production PBZ and then this treatment can indued signal that producing HSF (Heat shock transcriptional factor). Hot water can applied in strawberry plant once a week (50°C, 2 sec) or by atmosphere temperature for 1 -2 hours via transmit temperate.
After break, the class was continued by Indonesian lecturer which informed us about simulated availability moisture and that effect to productivity of land, irrigation and groundwater. Subsequently, the students presentation was done by students of group A, E and F include my presentation about my thesis.
The end of presentation from first day of summer course programs was done at 06.00 pm and the all of participant divided into each group. Each group made each plan to get dinner in the other places and discuss about their tasks in lembang. My group (E group) choosed “Favorite” that sell meatball and noodle as dinner place for that day. At 09.00 pm, we met with other group in Landhuis guest house and also got direction from committee about the equipment to experiment and our tasks for tomorrow. Afterthat, the discussion on each group was continued until 10.00 pm.
